Fretboard replacement (warning: not for weak stomachs)

REMOVAL

First we had to remove the existing fretboard. To do this we heated the fretboard with a common household clothes iron.

Notice how we gradually try to pry the fretboard loose . Pretty scary, huh??

Slowly but surely.....

The fretboard has been removed.

NEW FRETBOARD PREPARATION

Brand new ebony fretboard from Stewmac.

After routing for inlays

Rough fitting the inlays before the glue. Although not shown, the neck was cut to size and new binding installed.

FREBOARD INSTALLATION

In the meantime the guitar was stripped (see the refinish pictorial). Plenty of clamps are used to glue in the new fretboard.

The fretboard has successfully been installed. Now, onto the refinish. We opted to do all the finish work except for the final clear coat before installing the frets.

On to the next pictorial in the series (complete refinish)
