Pickup Combinations Voiced Specifically for Humb-Single-Single Operation
(Note: This page is for Humb-Single-Single configurations. To order a single-single-single assembly, click here)

  • The hum-single-single Strat setup is really one of the most versatile pickup configurations for the working guitarist. You can show up at a recording session or gig with one axe and with that single instrument and you can sound like Stevie Ray Vaughn on one song, followed by Eddie Van Halen on the next. The only "gotcha" is that pickup selection for a hum-single-single Strat isn't the easiest thing. I can't tell you how many times I've had players stop by with a grand plan to combine an oompaloompa in the the neck with a hornswaddler in the middle and a vermiciousknid in the bridge (yes, I grew up on Willy Wonka), and are left with an unbalanced, non-humcanceling and possibly out-of-phase mess. If the humbucker is too over the top, it won't balance well with the 2 single coils. On the other hand, if the humbucker isn't hot enough it won't have a convincing single-coil tone when tapped. The key is to achieve a good balance between the humbucker and single coils when the humbucker is played in full mode as well as in "tapped" mode. Another common problem when putting a humbucker in a Strat is the pole piece spacing. The standard 48 mm pole piece spacing for humbuckers is designed to fit a Gibson style guitar. When you put the same pickup in a Strat the pole pieces don't line up well with the strings. The best solution is to use what is commonly referred to as "F" spacing, meaning the humbucker will have the wider (50 mm) spacing so the pole pieces line up with your strings. Another critical point is to ensure the middle strat pickup is reverse wound from both the neck single coil, and the "live" single coil of the humbucker when played in "tapped" mode so you can have 3 hum-canceling positions (1, 2 and 4).

Rest assured that any pickup combination we sell on this page will be voiced specifically for the humb-single-single Strat. This means:
    1. The middle pickup will be reverse wound from both the neck pickup, and the "live" coil of the humbucker when tapped. The exceptions are the DiMarzio Virtual Vintage and Area 58/61/67 pickups since these pickups are already hum-cancelling.
    2. The humbucker will come with either 4 or 3 conductor wiring for coil tapping
    3. If available as an option from the pickup manufacturer, the humbucker will be "F" spaced.

  • LINDY FRALIN PICKUPS- These are absolutely fabulous pickups. We have installed these in countless guitars and what is rather amazing is how consistently good they sound. They are wound by hand by Lindy and his staff in Richmond, VA. All of Lindy's humbuckers are wound with 42 Plain Enamel wire like the old P.A.F.’s. We order his humbuckers in the wider "F" spacing recommended for Strats. As indicated above, we specifically order these to be hum canceling when the tapped humbucker is combined with a Strat reverse middle. We carry both Lindy's Humbucker and UnBucker models. In the Unbucker, Lindy winds the screw coil stronger than the slug coil. This makes the pickup sound a little more single coil like, but the best reason to do this is for coil tapping. When tapped the stronger coil is active as opposed to half a pickup. All of the sets we order from Lindy Fralin come with 3 conductor wire (the 3rd wire is used for coil tapping).

As far as the single coils are concerned, you can select between Vintage Hots and Blues Specials.
Vintage Hots are wound with 42 gauge Heavy Formvar wire and are wound to average 50’s specs, while the bridge is as hot as possible with this wire. Blues Specials are wound with 42 SPN and has 5% more turns than the Vintage Hot. This makes it a 5% stronger pickup. It will have 5% more mids and 5% less high end.

In summary, we offer 4 choices for Fralin Humb-Single-Single setups:
      1. Unbucker / Vintage Hots
      2. Unbucker / Blues Specials
      3. Humbucker / Vintage Hots
      4. Humbucker / Blues Specials

  • DIMARZIO - DiMarzio is a fine USA company located in Staten Island New York. They have been around for a very long time and practically invented the after market pickup space. Engineer Steve Blucher is world renowned for innovative pickup designs. DiMarzio has a very large and comprehensive catalog of pickups, especially humbuckers. To help simplify the ordering process at Rothstein Guitars, we have created just 3 categories of pickup configurations for you to select from when ordering a prewired assembly. Don't let this fool you, there are really endless combinations, we have just lumped then into 3 categories!! You must remember to fill in the "comments" field to let us know the specific models you want. Please note: Since DiMarzio has such a large catalog, it is impossible for us to maintain inventory on all of their pickups. All DiMarzio orders will be "special ordered." Not to worry, this really shouldn't be an issue for you at all since DiMarzio special orders generally take about a week, and the turn around time for our prewired assemblies is generally 2 weeks regardless.

As far as DiMarzio humbuckers are concerend, you may order any model (see dimarzio.com). If you are looking for our personal recommendation, we feel one of the best DiMrazio models for bridge humbucker in a hum-single-single Strat is the Tone Zone. The Tone Zone is strong enough so that the pickup can stand on its own when tapped, yet not so over the top that it won't balance well with the 2 single coils. The Tone Zone will work nicely with a set of Blue Velvets in the neck/middle, as well as with the hum-cancelling Area 58 and/or Area 61 pickups.

Select from the following 2 basic categories of pickup combinations. Remember, for all of these you must specifiy the specific models in the comments field. Unless other wise specified by you, the humbucker will be F-Spaced.:
      1. Humbucker / Area 58, 61, 67 & VV - to combine any DiMarzio humbucker with any combination of the hum-canceling Area 58 , Area 61 pickups, Area 67 and Virtual Vintage pickups in the neck/middle positions (please specify specific models in the comments field)
      2. Humbucker / Blue Velvet - - to combine any DiMarzio humbucker with Blue Velvet pickups in the neck/middle positions. Blue Velvets are "true single coil" pickups and aren't hum-canceling. You can substitute another true single coil (such as Red Velvet or Class of 55, just indicate so in the comments field)

  • RIO GRANDE PICKUPS- We like the combination of a Tallboy humbucker, with a Halfbreed in the middle and a Vintage Tallboy in the neck. The Tallboy humbucker is perfect for players who will not compromise on the "single coil" mode of a standard humbucking type pickup. When split to one coil this pickup gives you the sound of a "true" single coil. We find when combined with a Halfbreed in the middle position your get terrific "quack" in the #2 position of your 5-way switch.

  • SUHR PICKUPS- We like the combination of SSV in the bridge with a pair of FL's (with RWRP middle pickup). If you want another combination no problem, just specify in the comments field. Either way, these pickups will need to be special ordered from Suhr Guitars.

  • CURTIS NOVAK - If you're looking for the highest quality hand-wound "boutique" pickups then check out Curtis Novak. Curt has been hand winding pickups for 20 years and has studied the methods of the masters. He is quite adept at "scatterwinding" which many feel is one of the secrets to great tone. You will see some very unique options on his site. You will love a Curtis Novak PAF in the bridge position coupled with a couple of his single coil strat pickups in the neck/middle position.

1

Dial-A-Tap

This is a very cool way to set up a Strat for Humb-Single-Single operation. The first tone control is a master tone which controls all pickups. The lower pot is a Dial-A-Tap which means you can dial in just the right amount of the split humbucker. It will short out the "screw coil" and leave in the "slug coil" (the slug coil is the one furthest from the bridge)

2

11 Combo Strat with Dial A Tap

This is our most popular configuration. Same as above, only this comes with a neck-on Switch to get 11 pickup combinations. Click here for more details about this.

Master Volume

Master Tone on push-pull to engage "neck-on" switch

Dial-A-Tap

3

Jimmie Vaughn Strat w/Coil Tap

This features standard strat swiching, but you can tap the humbucker via a push-pull on the first tone control. The first tone control affects positions 4 and 5 of the selector switch only (neck and neck/mid) and the second tone control affects positions 1 and 2 only (bridge and bridge/mid). The only position without a tone control is position 3.

Master Volume

Tone for positions 1 & 2 of the selector switch w/push-pull for coil tap

Tone for positions 4 & 5 of the selector switch

4

Lonestar "Auto-Tap"

This wiring features "auto-tapping" of the humbucker as soon as the 5 way switch hits position 2.

  • Switch Position 1: Bridge Pickup (Both Coils)
  • Switch Position 2: Bridge + Middle Pickups (Bridge Pickup Tapped)
  • Switch Position 3: Middle Pickup
  • Switch Position 4: Neck + Middle Pickups
  • Switch Position 5: Neck Pickup

A Super Switch (5 way, 4 pole) is used so you can have two tone controls and still tap the humbucker automatically when you switch to the 2 position. The tone controls use different capacitors rather than sharing one. The top tone control (for the two single coils) uses a .047uf capacitor, while the bottom tone control (for the humbucker) uses a .022uf cap (.022uf is the de facto standard for a humbucker).

Master Volume

Tone for the two single coils only

 Tone for bridge pickup only

Tone Capacitor

  • SBE Orange Drop capacitors will be used at no extra charge, or for an upcharge you may select between Alessandro High End vintage repro wax and paper capacitors, Vitamin Q Paper & Oil capacitors, and the ultra high quality V-Cap TFTF Teflon® Film and Foil capacitors. The price will vary depending upon which capacitor you select. There is an option to choose a 2nd tone cap as well. This is only required for Lonestar Wiring, otherwise leave this field blank.

Read about capacitor choices here.

Volume Kit

  • A volume kit (also know as a "treble retention circuit" or "high-pass filter") is used to prevent the loss of highs associated with lowering the volume on your guitar. We use a 1000 pf Mallory 150 Series metalized polyester tubular capacitor in parallel with a 150K resistor

Solderless Option

We are now offering you a solderless option when purchasing prewired S assemblies with pickups for a $25 upcharge.

  • Installation is pretty easy as you only have 3 solder connections to make. To make it even easier, we can wire your assembly with pin and socket connectors, thus eliminating the need for soldering. We'll send you a new claw and output jack with pin connectors attached to match up to corresponding socket connectors in the prewired harness. The pins and sockets are color-coded, so all you will need to do is match the colors and connect corresponding male and female connectors. In total, your assembly will include 3 pin/socket pairs, 2 pairs for the output jack and 1 additional pair for the trem claw. Note: When you remove your existing trem claw you will need to re-setup your guitar. If you are not familiar with how to properly setup a Strat style guitar with a floating tremolo, then you should NOT opt for the solderless option.

Copper Shield

  • We may be the only companiy offering pre-wired harnesses with very high quality, noise canceling, THICK copper shielding as opposed to the flimsy aluminum foil that others will use. Read more about our shields here.
